If you sell to both retail and wholesale customers, you may want different products or collections to appear for each group. Product Visibility helps you control what customers see on your storefront.

If retail customers are shopping on your site, you may not want those visitors to have access to the same products or collections as your wholesale customers. Here are a few common ways merchants use Product Visibility.

Note: Product Visibility controls what appears on your online storefront, but it may not fully remove items from theme navigation menus or search results. Your Shopify theme controls most navigation and search behavior.

Hiding products and collections from retail customers

You might have individual products for retail customers to purchase, but you may also have products or collections in your store representing bundles or cases of products that are only available to wholesale customers. By setting up a Product Visibility rule targeting your case-sized products, you can make sure those certain products are only visible to your tagged wholesale customers.

Using Product Visibility to hide case-sized products or collections from retail customers makes it simple to keep track of inventory for retail and wholesale customers. Inventory for your case-sized products will be tracked separately in your Shopify admin from your retail products.

Product Visibility applies only to your Online Store sales channel. It does not hide products in third-party channels (for example, Shop, Buy Button, or Google).

Hiding products and collections from some of your wholesale customers

It's common to have different tiers of wholesale discounts for different customer groups. In addition to this, you might also have products or collections in your inventory that are only for purchase by certain wholesale customer groups. By setting up different Product Visibility rules, you can control which products are seen by each of your wholesale groups when they log in. Below, let's take a look at how you'd set this up.

In your Wholesale Hub dashboard, you'd first have some wholesale groups set up like this:

Discount tag: Gold

Discount: 25% off case-sized candles and case-sized essential oils

Discount tag: Silver
Discount: 20% off case-sized candles

Once your wholesale groups are set up, you'd create Product Visibility rules like this:

Product visibility rule 1: Customer tag Gold
Selected products: case-sized candles and case-sized essential oils

Product visibility rule 2: Customer tag Silver

Selected products: case-sized candles

With the above setup, wholesale customers tagged with Gold have access to case-sized candles and case-sized essential oils, while wholesale customers tagged with Silver only have access to case-sized candles. Setting up rules like this can also work well if you have a loyalty customer group with access to exclusive products!
